Ancient Indo-Tibetan banded agate bead from India, dating circa 500 BCE–1000 CE, 41 x 16.2 mm, with natural eye and chevron markings, drilled as a single loose bead in good condition.
Description from the seller
ANCIENT INDO-TIBETAN BANDED AGATE BEAD — Natural Eye Pattern
A large and striking ancient banded agate bead of the type traded across the Himalayan belt — known in the trade as Indo-Tibetan or Himalayan banded agate. Natural growth layers within the stone have formed concentric "eye" rings around each end of the drilled perforation, along with bold chevron and zigzag banding running the length of the bead. These are entirely natural formations within the agate itself, not carved or applied.
A NOTE ON COLOR — LIKELY NATURAL, UNTREATED TONE
Most banded agate of this kind on the market has been darkened using the traditional honey/sugar-and-acid method, which turns the stone's background nearly black to sharpen the contrast of its white banding. This bead instead shows a soft, pale cream and gray palette with gentle natural red-brown mineral staining — the opposite of what that treatment produces. For that reason, we believe this bead very likely retains its natural, untreated color, rather than having undergone the traditional blackening enhancement.
PLEASE NOTE — THIS IS A SINGLE LOOSE BEAD
As shown, this is one individual ancient bead, sold loose and unmounted, exactly as it survives today. A substantial, statement-making focal piece — ideal as a pendant, threaded as the centerpiece of a necklace with other ancient beads, or kept as a standalone collector's piece.
THE DETAILS THAT MATTER
Beads of this type are dated broadly to the ancient trade-bead era, circa 500 BCE – 1000 CE, and are found across the Himalayan belt — India, Tibet, Nepal, China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan — carried along ancient trade and pilgrimage routes through Central and Western Asia. At 41mm long, this is a notably large example, with the natural eye and chevron patterning present and consistent at both ends — clear evidence of genuine geological banding rather than a modern reproduction. The surface shows a deep, hand-polished sheen consistent with age and handling.
MATERIAL & LOOK
Natural banded agate in a pale cream and soft gray palette, with natural eye formations at both ends and gentle reddish mineral staining across part of the surface. The bead measures 41 x 16.2 mm — a substantial, museum-worthy size for the type.
WHY COLLECTORS SEEK OUT THIS BEAD
Large Indo-Tibetan banded agate beads with well-defined natural eye and chevron patterning are considerably rarer than smaller, plain-banded examples — and a piece that appears to have escaped the traditional darkening treatment, retaining its natural pale tone, is a genuine rarity within the category. Sought after by collectors of ancient Himalayan trade beads, Buddhist mala components, and natural eye agate formations specifically.
