1585 FIRST EDITION OF ASTRONOMY, MATHEMATICS, NAVIGATION, METEOROLOGY, GEOMETRY, ASTROLOGY, PTOLEMY, JOHANNES DE SACROBOSCO, CARTOGRAPHY, GEOGRAPHY, GNOMONICS, SUNDIALS by Francesco Barozzi (1537-1604), a mathematician and astronomer who contributed to the revival of geometry and the expansion of Euclid, Ptolemy and Johannes de Sacrobosco's works, and taught mathematical sciences at the University of Padova. The book is a manual for sailors, merchants, astronomers, and explorers, richly illustrated with 154 illustrations and 3 big folding maps (height 238 x width 248 mm); the first map illustrates the complete and perfect arrangement of all winds according to recent scholars. The second map displays a nautical chart and demonstrates the geometric construction of navigational maps using a dense network of intersecting rhumb lines radiating from a central compass rose. The third map explains all the climates and parallels of the entire globe of earth and water according to recent geographers. In the first part Barozzi takes the concepts of the famous work "De Sphaera Mundi" by Johannes de Sacrobosco or John of Holywood (c. 1195-1256), analyzes and expands it, and adds important new features and calculations, dedicates the first 51 pages to Sacrobosco work and reveals 84 errors. Unlike standard scholastic commentaries that treated celestial physics philosophically, Barozzi treated astronomy as applied pure geometry. Every proposition is accompanied by diagrams and formal proofs. The book is in very good condition with its antique binding of the period, and detailed and intact illustrations.

This is the first edition of "Cosmographia In Quatuor Libros" plus the "De Sphaera Mundi", a complete manual on the elements of arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, and spherical geometry (from Theodosius of Bithynia). The book covers eclipses, comets, temperatures, climate zones, sundials, solar apogee, the calculation of meridians, longitudes, sizes of the planets and their distances from the Earth, future positions and orbits of several planets, measuring time and light according to the seasons, and a new astrolabe-type instrument. BOOK I: Fabric of the Universe, lays out foundational geometric definitions and establishes the spherical nature of the heavens and Earth. Barozzi delineates the nested geocentric cosmos, the central immobility of the terrestrial globe, and the sequence of celestial spheres.

BOOK II: Celestial Circles and Motions, analyzes the systems of the celestial sphere, describes great and small circles, the celestial equator, the ecliptic, the zodiac, the meridian, the horizon, the colures, the tropics, diurnal rotation, and the seasonal variations of solar ascension.

BOOK III: Terrestrial Geography, Climates and bridges astronomy with geography. Barozzi maps out the terrestrial zones, the division of climates, variations in shadow lengths, latitude and longitude measurement, and the proportional duration of daylight across different latitudes.

BOOK IV: Planetary Models and Eclipses, examines the irregular paths of the planets, eccentric deferents, and epicycles within the Ptolemaic framework. It provides detailed geometric constructions to explain retrogradations, stations, and solar and lunar eclipses.
