17th‑century Portuguese Baroque Contador cabinet, made of wood, with six carved-panel drawers and brass fittings, base added in the 19th century, origin Portugal, dimensions 141.5 x 90 x 45 cm, in good condition with minor signs of aging and small spots.
Description from the seller
Baroque Portuguese Contador Cabinet
Portuguese furniture from the colonial era of the 17th century, the “Contador com Trempe.” In the 17th century, this type of furniture developed across Europe, albeit with different expressions of national styles. In Portugal this piece stood like no other for the so-called Portuguese “national style” of furniture. Generally, these pieces were used to store valuables and documents. With the addition of the standard (“com trempe” in Portugal), the cabinets became autonomous for the first time, whereas until then they were, for example, simply placed on an existing table.
The surrounding casework is decorated with the typical profiles. Six drawers, with carved profiles, whose panels give the viewer the impression that there are nine drawers. Brass fittings on each drawer and a handle on both sides, recalling the original function, since these pieces of furniture originally had no separate base.
Base/stand produced in the 19th century, with some restorations
