Antique Art Deco tray – ceramic tile with floral decoration – metal gallery edge – marked 1921

A remarkable and very decorative Art Deco tray from the early 1920s, featuring a square ceramic insert in an openwork metal frame. A beautiful utilitarian object in which the transition from Jugendstil to Art Deco is beautifully visible.

The ceramic plate is finished in off-white and features a strongly symmetrical decoration in deep red, pink and green. Stylized flowers, geometric lines and corner ornaments combine to form a balanced pattern that is characteristic of the innovative European design around 1920.

On the underside there is clearly engraved/drawn the year 1921, together with a monogram or factory mark and the number 16. The exact manufacturer cannot be determined with full certainty from the markings present.

In terms of construction, the tray closely resembles German tableware from Nuremberg from this period. Manufacturers such as Nürnberger Metallwarenfabrik Max Dannhorn specialized in ceramic or stoneware plates that were placed in decorative metal mounts. Max Dannhorn produced such household and serving objects and used ceramic inserts from, among others, Villeroy & Boch for a portion of these products. The registered Max Dannhorn production of this type is dated from about 1895 and continued until around 1921.

Similar preserved examples also combine a ceramic plate with an openworked, often silver-plated metal edge. The ceramic decors move stylistically between Jugendstil and the more geometric vocabulary that would soon fully become Art Deco.

The surround of this piece is particularly attractive: an openwork geometric gallery edge, a profiled lower edge and four small spherical feet causing it to stand slightly above the tabletop. The aged silvery metal has a beautiful natural patina that suits the age well.

Condition
The tray is in a beautiful authentic used condition, appropriate for an object over a hundred years old. The metal shows localized discoloration, oxidation, patina and signs of use. Also on the ceramic plate there are light aging and use traces visible. The decor remains strikingly fresh and clearly present.

A charming and particularly decorative piece for lovers of Art Deco, Jugendstil, early 20th-century ceramics and historic tableware. Suitable as a tray or equally beautiful as a decorative object on a sideboard, table or display cabinet.
