Hand-embroidered tapestry dating to the mid-20th century with a wooden frame and fabric tapestry, external dimensions about 95 × 80 cm, in good vintage condition.
Description from the seller
Hand-embroidered tapestry depicting a young woman reading – antique-style wooden frame, 20th century
Elegant handmade embroidered tapestry depicting a young woman seated and reading, dressed in a refined garment with warm colours and surrounded by decorative fabrics and cushions.
The composition features a rich and atmospheric colour palette, with shades of ochre, yellow, brown, green and red. The work is made with numerous small stitches on canvas, creating detailed modelling and colour variations in the figure and background.
The reverse bears the inscription “FRAGONARD”, suggesting a reference to the work or artistic style of the French painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard. This is not an original painting by Fragonard, but rather a decorative textile work inspired by the figurative tradition of the 18th century.
The tapestry is presented in an imposing wooden frame with an antique-gold finish and dark ornamental decoration along the inner and outer profiles. The frame has an attractive aged patina, with small scratches, abrasions and surface craquelure consistent with its vintage character.
Period: 20th century, undocumented dating
Style: Classical, figurative, Rococo-inspired
Technique: Hand embroidery / tapestry
Materials: Embroidered textile, canvas and wooden frame
Subject: Young woman reading
External dimensions: approximately 95 × 80 cm
Internal tapestry dimensions: approximately 80 × 67 cm
Condition
Good overall vintage condition considering its age. The textile retains attractive colours and decorative quality. The wooden frame shows various signs of age, including small scratches, abrasions and imperfections to the finish, clearly visible in the photographs. The reverse also shows normal ageing of the backing material.
The photographs form an integral part of the description and document the condition of the piece.
A charming decorative work with strong visual presence, suitable for a classical living room, study, library, entrance hall or vintage/antique-style interior.
