Museum piece this hairpin from Sumba - Sumba - Indonesia (No reserve price)

The hairpin is carved from a single piece of dark hardwood and has a long, slender, tapering pin. The upper section is particularly attractive, with two carved bands of geometric decoration and a strongly stylized animal figure forming the top. The animal has an elongated head with a large projecting form, giving the object a very distinctive and almost humorous character. The surface has developed a beautiful dark brown patina, with visible wear from age and handling, particularly around the carved upper section. The combination of the simple elongated pin and the much more elaborate sculptural top makes this a charming example of traditional Sumbanese personal ornament. Such hairpins were worn in the hair and could be both practical and decorative objects, reflecting the importance of personal adornment in traditional Sumbanese culture. Origin: Sumba, Indonesia. Material: hardwood. Function: hairpin and personal ornament. Condition: good old condition with wear and patina consistent with age and use. A very expressive and unusual piece of traditional Sumbanese art.
