Well conserved fine canoe front New Guine Yapen Island with korwzr figures, second half of 20th - muka perahu - Yapen - West Papua (No reserve price)

An impressive and finely carved wooden canoe front ornament from Yapen Island, northern Papua, dating back to the mid-1950s. This remarkable piece was traditionally attached to the bow of a canoe, where it served an important protective and spiritual function. Its purpose was to safeguard the crew against evil spirits and supernatural dangers encountered during voyages at sea. The ornament features an elaborate openwork composition with numerous circular perforations, flowing geometric patterns and interconnecting carved elements. At the upper end is a stylized ancestral head with a prominent nose and strongly defined facial features. The intricate carving reflects the artistic traditions and spiritual beliefs of the coastal communities of Yapen Island. The ancestral figure and decorative motifs were believed to provide supernatural protection, helping the canoe and its occupants travel safely across the often unpredictable waters surrounding the island. Carved from a single piece of wood, the ornament has developed a beautiful natural brown patina over approximately seventy years. It shows signs of age and traditional use, including some minor wear and small losses, which contribute to its authentic appearance. A fascinating example of traditional Papuan maritime art, combining skilled craftsmanship with the spiritual beliefs of the islanders. An attractive and increasingly difficult-to-find piece for collectors of early Oceanic and Melanesian art.
