Description from the seller
"Le Sphinx" is part of a late 1990s series of highly stylized standalone illustrations produced by the legendary French artist Moebius (Jean Giraud), one of the most influential comic, fantasy, and science fiction artists of the 20th century.
The Theme:
It channels Moebius's fascination with metafisico (metaphysical) and surrealist science fiction themes. The image features enigmatic characters, strange symbolic markings on clothing, a mythical winged creature, and a modern, stylized sphinx-like giant figure sitting calmly on the left.
The Publisher:
The work was published in 1998 by Stardom, a publishing house closely linked with the artist (co-founded with his wife, Isabelle Giraud) to produce premium, highly controlled editions of his graphic art portfolio outside standard comic book channels.
Technique (Serigraphy / Silkscreen):
Moebius’s graphic illustrations are highly sought after because of the intense, labor-intensive precision of traditional European fine-art printing techniques.
This artwork is a traditional serigraph (silkscreen print). Rather than a mass-production digital print, serigraphy involves layering ink manually through fine mesh stencils onto the paper. It is a 2-color serigraph, using precise black ink line-work laid over an evocative, flat-toned cerulean blue gradient wash.
The piece is printed on heavy-weight, premium art cardboard (cartoncino di pregio / vélin) chosen specifically for its acid-free, long-lasting quality and its ability to absorb dense ink without buckling.
Signature & Edition: It was limited strictly to 200 pieces worldwide. Each authentic copy is individually numbered and signed in pencil by Moebius in the bottom-right margin.
Because it originates from a very restricted run of 200 copies, "Le Sphinx" doesn't appear on the public market frequently.
framed: 50 x 50 cm
the drawing itself is approximately 32 x 32 cm
