Description from the seller
Heavy Bronze Apothecary Mortar – Renaissance Style "Anno 1590" Replica
Description:
A very heavy and high-quality decorative bronze apothecary mortar, beautifully crafted in the traditional Dutch Renaissance style (Deventer type).
The upper rim features an embossed historical inscription: "ANNO 1590" along with the traditional Old Dutch motto: "LIEFDE VERWINT AL DINCK", which translates to "Love conquers all things". The body is heavily ornamented with intricate relief patterns, decorative friezes, and features two solid, rectangular side handles.
The interior base shows regular, concentric lathe-turning marks from the mechanical finishing process, which confirms its production as a high-quality mid-to-late 20th-century vintage replica rather than a 16th-century original. The piece is solid, structurally sound, and boasts a superb, deep dark aged patina that gives it great historical character. Perfect for brocante lovers, rustic kitchen setups, or a modern cabinet of curiosities display. (Please note: pestle is not included).
• Object: Apothecary Mortar
• Style: Renaissance Revival / Dutch Flemish Style
• Period: Second half 20th century (Vintage)
• Material: Bronze / Heavy cast alloy
• Country of Origin: Netherlands / Italy
• Condition: Very good vintage condition. No cracks or structural damage. Beautiful original aged patina with minor surface wear consistent with age and decorative use.
The mortar is structurally sound and gives a beautiful, clear, high pitched metallic ring when struck.

Craftsmanship & Casting Technique
Each sculpture is individually cast using the traditional lost-wax casting method (cire perdue) and meticulously hand-finished by skilled artisans. This prestigious technique is renowned for capturing exceptional detail, refined textures and the timeless beauty of fine bronze sculpture, ensuring that every piece possesses its own unique character.
As a natural consequence of this artisanal casting process, small residual particles from production may occasionally remain inside the sculpture. This is an inherent characteristic of the traditional manufacturing technique and does not affect the quality, structural integrity, durability or artistic value of the artwork in any way.
