Kyo-yaki ceramic tall cup by Yasutaka Shimizu from Japan, contemporary style, circa 1990–2000, in like-new condition, dimensions H16 x W8 cm (diameter 16 cm), white glaze with violet tones over a red earthy base, signed base, includes a paulownia wooden box and archival document.
Description from the seller
An extraordinary tall cup in Kyo-yaki ceramic, the pinnacle expression of Kyoto's contemporary ceramic art. A work with a slender, elegant charm, capable of marrying the daily functionality of tea art with a refined modern aesthetic.
The strength of the piece lies in the refined contrast between the white glaze and the sophisticated violet hue, which runs along the vertical development of the cup over the earthy red base. The transition and controlled fusion of the two glazes testify to extraordinary technical mastery and perfect control of the firing process.
Yasutaka Shimizu is a son of artists and guardian of a celebrated lineage of Kyoto ceramists, and he was officially recognized in 2011 as a Living National Treasure of Kyoto Prefecture. His works are celebrated for their formal balance and innovative glaze research.
Brand impressed/engraved on the base of the piece, a paulownia wooden box signed and hand-sealed by the master, and an archival document containing the biography, awards and the artist’s career, make this set a perfect complete collector’s accessory.
