**Old Timor Lime Vessel with Carved Animal Figure** Interesting old lime vessel from Timor, traditionally used for keeping lime as part of the widespread practice of betel nut chewing\. Lime was an essential ingredient of the betel quid and containers such as this were practical personal objects that could also receive considerable decorative attention\. This example is particularly attractive because of the carved animal figure decorating the vessel\. Animal representations occur frequently in the traditional art of Timor and could have decorative as well as symbolic significance\. Without further information about its precise place of origin, the meaning of the animal on this particular piece cannot be determined with certainty\. The vessel has a beautiful aged surface and shows traces of long traditional use, adding greatly to its character\. Origin: Timor, Indonesia Material: carved natural material Function: lime container for betel nut chewing Decoration: carved animal figure Dating: first half to mid 20th century Condition: good, with wear and patina consistent with age and traditional use A charming and highly decorative piece of traditional Timorese material culture and an interesting addition to a collection of Indonesian or Southeast Asian tribal art\.
