Pair of wooden frames in ivory lacquer and gold, Florence, Italy, from the 1930s; external 25 × 20 cm, internal 18 × 13 cm, in good condition with signs of aging, antique-inspired style.
Description from the seller
Matching pair of wooden frames in ivory lacquer and gold. Florence, Italy, 1930s. MADE IN ITALY.
Two identical frames, made to hang together: the shaped outer edge runs in soft waves, each corner is finished with a carved and gilded leaf cartouche, and the whole ivory field is engraved with a fine lattice of incised lines that catches the light as you move past it. Inside, a beaded gilt border runs all the way round the sight edge.
This is the classic Florentine work of the period: the ivory lacquer kept pale and matt so that the gold does the talking, used only where it counts - corners, beading and edges. The gilding is worn in the right places, with the ivory ground showing through on the high points, the honest patina of ninety years.
A pair is always worth more than two single frames: two portraits, two prints, two small mirrors facing each other on a wall - the symmetry does half the work for you.
External measurements 25 x 20 cm each, inner sight size 18 x 13 cm. Good condition, with small chips and losses along the edges and the normal signs of age, exactly as shown in the photos. Careful packaging and tracked shipping worldwide.
