AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Set of 5 antique Japanese porcelain dishes – Bijin in relief kimono – polychrome and gilded decoration – Japan – Shōwa period

Very beautiful set of five Japanese porcelain dishes, featuring a remarkable figurative relief decoration.

Each dish represents an elegant bijin (美人), a young Japanese woman dressed in a sumptuous traditional kimono, whose silhouette and garments are delicately modelled in relief. The kimono is richly decorated with traditional Japanese floral and geometric motifs, in a beautiful palette of blues, greens, orange-red, pink and yellow, enhanced with gilded highlights.

The composition is particularly original: the irregular shape of the dish follows the drawing of the kimono, giving the piece a nearly sculptural appearance. The white face of the young woman and her long black hair provide an elegant contrast with the richness of the decoration.

The reverse and the foot are also decorated in blue underglaze with stylized botanical motifs, showing careful decorative workmanship even on the bottom of the pieces.

Estimated period: Japan, Shōwa period, probably around 1930–1960. This dating remains stylistic estimate, as no clearly identifiable maker's mark is visible.

Dimensions of each piece:
Width: approximately 18.3 cm
Height: approximately 3 cm

Number of pieces: 5

This set was acquired in Japan at an online auction about ten years ago, for a price of around 30,000 yen.

Lovely decorative and collectible set, particularly interesting for its gilt-relief bijin decoration, the richness of the kimono motifs and its gilded details.

Condition: see carefully the photographs, which are an integral part of the description.
