Belgian Art Deco zinc alloy figural table lamp depicting a newspaper boy, dating to 1970–1980, with a green marble base and in working order.
Description from the seller
Art Deco figural table lamp of a newspaper boy (often referred to as "Le Siffleur" or the whistler), produced in Belgium by the manufacturer J.M. around the 1930s.
The newspaper (Le Figaro): The roll under his arm clearly bears the title "FIGARO". This refers to the famous French daily Le Figaro. The sculpture thus depicts a typical Parisian or Brussels street- or newspaper-boy who whistles while leaning against a lamppost as he sells newspapers.
The lamppost (The lamp): The brass or copper rod against which the boy leans is the shaft of an antique street lamp. At the top of this rod there is a fixture with a small lamp. However the incandescent bulb is defective.
Material and base: The boy is cast in bronze-patinated régule (art bronze) and the entire street scene (including the cobbles on which he stands) is mounted on a solid green marbled marble base.
