A pair of Cambodian solid silver betel boxes modelled as decorated elephants, dating to 1900–1910.
Description from the seller
A fine pair of Cambodian Solid Silver zoomorphic betel boxes, both modelled in the form of richly decorated elephants and dating to the early 20th century.
Each elephant is worked with detailed chased and engraved decoration, including ornamental saddle cloths, floral and geometric motifs, stylised facial features and finely textured details across the body. The raised trunks, tusks and expressive ears give the pair a particularly lively and decorative appearance.
These elephant-shaped containers belong to the traditional Southeast Asian group of betel boxes, used for storing betel nut and related ingredients. The body of each elephant opens horizontally to form a small container, while the exterior decoration reflects traditional regional craftsmanship.
Condition
Both pieces are in very good to excellent antique condition overall, with light surface wear, patina, tarnishing and minor marks consistent with age and use. One elephant has a few very minor dents, but these do not detract from the overall appearance. No major damage noted. Please refer carefully to the photographs, which form an important part of the condition description.
Size:
each approx. L 10cm × H 7.5cm × D 5.2 cm
Total weight: approximately 118 g
