Two-piece desk set from 19th‑century Italy in silvered metal, comprising a letter opener and a pen, both with a relief of Giovanna d'Arco, in good used condition with minor signs of age, accompanied by its decorative case; height 17 cm, width 2 cm, depth 0.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Refined and rare 19th-century desk ensemble, consisting of a letter opener and a silvered metal pen, both adorned with elegant decorations depicting Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc), the French national heroine and symbolic figure of medieval history.
The letter opener features a long, tapered blade, surmounted by a splendid three-dimensional figure of Jeanne d'Arc, depicted standing in armor with a sword and medieval military attire. The sculpture is characterized by meticulous detailing, particularly evident in the face, the armor, the folds of the garment, and the accessories.
At the upper part of the blade appears an elaborate raised heraldic emblem, composed of a crown, a vertical sword, and fleur-de-lys motifs, elements that evoke the French monarchy and the historical iconography associated with Jeanne d'Arc.
The pen, with an elongated cylindrical shape, also presents a relief figure of Jeanne d'Arc, creating a harmonious decorative ensemble of notable collectible interest.
The set testifies to the historicist and romantic taste of the 19th century, a period during which the figure of Jeanne d'Arc experienced a significant cultural and artistic rediscovery in France.
The piece is accompanied by its elegant period case, externally clad in decorative material in yellow and black tones, with an ornamental metal clasp and a pale fabric-lined interior.
Era: 19th century.
Material: silvered metal.
Good overall condition
An fascinating example of 19th-century decorative collectibles, of particular interest to collectors of antique writing instruments, French historical objects, and memorabilia dedicated to Jeanne d'Arc.
