Description from the seller
2003 Maison LEROY Bourgogne Rouge.
Level: one cm under cork, half cm under cork.
Capsule: excellent.
Label: excellent.
Wine Overview:
• Producer: Produced by the legendary Maison Leroy, a prestigious negociant house managed by Lalou Bize-Leroy, who is widely considered one of the most iconic winemakers in the world.
• Appellation: Bourgogne AOC (Regional Appellation Controlee).
• Vintage: 2003, printed on the prominent neck label. The 2003 growing season in Europe was famously marked by an intense summer heatwave, yielding intensely ripe, concentrated, and rich berry profiles.
• Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Noir.
While a standard "Bourgogne Rouge" denotes entry-level regional tier positioning, bottles from Maison Leroy consistently perform and age far beyond typical generic regional wines, carrying high collectibility and substantial market value.
Profile Overview:
• Color: Deep, mature garnet with a distinct tawny or brick-red hue at the rim.
• Nose (Aromas): Rich and complex, leaning away from classic tart cherries toward a much riper, darker fruit profile. It is heavily defined by secondary and tertiary notes: smoky minerality, flint, forest floor, roasted herbs, and a distinctive "medicine cabinet" or wild game complexity.
• Palate (Taste): Medium-bodied and lush. It harmonizes dense, concentrated flavors of ripe cherry, plum, and strawberry with savory mushroom and earthy undertones. The influence of the oak barrels imparts a supple, velvety mouthfeel.
• Structure: Tannins are fine-grained, fully integrated, and smooth. Remarkably for a hot 2003 vintage, it has preserved a surprisingly vibrant, fresh acidity that keeps the palate lively and prevents the wine from tasting heavy or jammy.
Drinking Window & Serving:
The wine is fully mature and drinking beautifully right now. At over 20 years old, it has reached an elegant tertiary plateau. It is highly recommended to handle the bottle with care if sediment has settled and to serve it alongside rich dishes like roast duck breast, rack of lamb, or earthy mushroom risottos.
