Description from the seller
Item Description
A large Mashiko ware dish by Kimura Ichiro (1915–1978), featuring trailed glaze and iron painting. The central area is covered in a mottled grey-white glaze, over which a flowing, freely brushed iron-brown floral design has been painted. To either side, pooled glossy dark brown-black glaze alternates with broad bands of reddish-brown clay body. The rim is gently formed, and the unglazed foot ring bears a stamped seal. A wooden box is included, with a title and the signature "Kimura" written on the lid, along with a red seal. The bold, abstract composition reflects the modern Mashiko style for which the artist was known.
Artist Profile
Kimura Ichiro (1915–1978) was a ceramic artist who worked in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture. Born in 1915, he graduated from Tochigi Prefectural Mooka Middle School in 1933. He studied ceramics in Kyoto and trained under Hamada Shoji. In 1946, he established his own kiln in Mashiko. Having learned techniques in Kyoto that were not yet present in Mashiko at the time — including oxblood (copper red) glaze and marbling (neriage) — he is regarded as a pioneer of Mashiko modernism. In his later years, he focused on works combining oxblood glaze and iron painting. His awards include first place at the 2nd General Crafts Exhibition in 1949 and the Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency Award at the Japan Ceramics Exhibition in 1953. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art in 1998.
