Tomobako (共箱) dimensions: H 12 cm (4.72 in) × W 12.7 cm (5.00 in) × D 12.7 cm (5.00 in)
Period: Early Showa (circa 1940–1950)

This pair of Suanni (唐獅) Koro (香炉) are fine Japanese incense utensils from the early Showa period.

Crafted by traditional lost-wax casting in one piece, the Suanni beasts have full and sturdy forms. Their lion heads are raised with open mouths, and the manes feature elaborate, layered detailing. The bodies are fully decorated with scrolling foliage patterns in fluid lines. The burner is of separable lift-off design; the beast’s body can be lifted open to place incense inside, with smoke flowing out from the beast’s mouth. Supported by four solid feet, each base bears a cast square archaistic seal reading "Daming Xuande Nianzhi" (大明宣德年制), a Chinese-style homage mark made by Japanese craftsmen.

The cast iron is solid and heavy, covered with naturally aged antique patina and a mellow aged surface. They make excellent Japanese incense display pieces for tea rooms, studies and entryways. Displayed as a pair, they create a solemn presence, functional for burning incense and for appreciation.

This set of two Suanni burners comes with two new Tomobako.

Due to age, there is natural oxidation, age-related patina and wear from use. No repairs to the main bodies. Overall good condition relative to their period.
