Description from the seller
Brass-gold mirror with leather, following Gabriel Viardot, Art Nouveau, early 20th century – France
Materials: Wood, brass and leather
Style: Art Nouveau, following Gabriel Viardot
Period: Early 20th century
Country of origin: France
Good condition for its age and use
Overall dimensions: 46 x 63 x 2 cm.
Mirror dimensions: 32 x 37 cm.
Impressive modernist-design mirror, with a wooden core and an ornate front featuring plates of brass-gold and brown leather, following the designs of the celebrated Gabriel Viardot. Gabriel Viardot (1830-1906) was a Parisian designer, renowned worldwide for creating entirely unique pieces of furniture, with a highly personal and distinctive style. He began his production with decorative pieces, such as sculptural figures and mirrors, and soon designed larger furniture. His style is characterized by a Gothic essence reinterpreted under French modernist aesthetics, all marked by his own aesthetic signature. He also specialized in furniture of Oriental style or influence.
The piece presents a bell-shaped trapezoidal form, which widens organically toward the upper part and rests on a broad base, a silhouette very typical of modernist design. The external contour breaks with traditional shapes by combining straight segments on the lower sides with pronounced sinuous curves toward the ends. It expresses the movement’s fascination with nature, elegance and ornamental fluidity.
In addition to its own form, its ornamentation is based on various embossed motifs made using the repoussé technique. The two plates or sheets of brass-gold on the top show stylized dragon figures facing each other. On the remaining surface of the frame, brown leather pieces with stylized and interwoven botanical elements. All profiles are finished with rows of pyramid-shaped tacks.
The product shipment will be paid by the buyer according to dimensions, weight and destination. Shipping costs include professional bespoke packaging; and personalized shipping, with tracking number and warranty.
The buyer will be responsible for paying import duties and any taxes in the destination country, if any. Please note the seller’s liability disclaimer regarding possible customs charges, as they are charged in the destination country and the amount payable is determined by that country’s customs. If an export license is required, the costs are borne by the buyer. The cost depends progressively on the value of the work to be exported.
