Pair of hand-carved wooden Moai statues from Chile, with pukao and engraved backs including rongorongo-inspired signs and the birdman motif, measuring 34 cm high, 7 cm deep, 7 cm wide, weighing 2 kg, dating to the late 20th century, in good condition as authorized replicas.
Description from the seller
Pair of statuettes representing the famous Moai of Easter Island (Rapa Nui), hand-carved from wood.
Moai with a pukao
Wearing its pukao, the cylindrical traditional hat of the island's great statues. Face with a long nose and a pronounced chin, long ears, hands joined on the belly. Engraved belt and a circular motif on the back.
Engraved Moai
Face in a strong profile, long ears and hands sculpted along the body. The back is richly engraved:
• symbols inspired by Rongorongo, the traditional script of Rapa Nui
• bird-man motif (tangata manu), emblem of the Make-Make cult
• motifs of ceremonial paddles and symbolic decorations
Nice brown patina, careful and expressive sculpture. The contrast between the two statuettes makes the pair decorative.
Hand-carved, with visible tool marks under the base of one of the statuettes. Unmarked.
Condition: good overall. Small scratches and signs of wear, slight natural wood cracks (on the pukao and under one of the bases). See photos.
