Gran Globo Terráqueo Lumi, a wooden illuminated globe on a tripod stand with a double meridian, 30 cm globe, 36 cm outer diameter and 43 cm total height, dating to circa 1970–1980, in good used condition with an original electrical system and warm ambient lighting.
Description from the seller
Authentic and rare luminous collectible terrestrial globe from the famous Danish cartography house Scan-Globe A/S, high-end World Antique model released in 1988 [dn5fT2.png]. Entire edition in French.
This large-sized specimen is mounted on a magnificent decorative framework that includes a double meridian (full arc) and a tripod base, all in solid varnished wood with a beautiful warm tone. The piece preserves in perfect condition its original metal international time dial at the North Pole [dn5fT2.png].
Historical and Cartographic Interest (Late Cold War):
The cartography of this globe makes it a magnificent geopolitical testament of its era:
• The political map still shows the U.R.S.S. (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) and the city of Tselinograd (Kazakhstan) [dn5fT2.png].
• The globe is richly decorated with illustrations of historic and scientific landmarks: the route of the Alexander von Humboldt expedition (1799-1804), the historic transpolar voyage of the submarine Nautilus (1958), and the maritime route of Christopher Columbus (1492), all accompanied by their respective portraits [dn5fT2.png].
• Comprehensive nautical cartography including the great ocean currents (such as the Gulf Stream) and the scientific record of the oceanographic vessel "Abisko" by Nassy (1986) [dn5fT2.png].
Official Dimensions (Large Model):
• Total circumference of the wooden frame: approx. 132 cm
• Overall exterior diameter: 36 cm
• Diameter of the cartographic sphere: 30 cm
• Total height of the piece: 43 cm
Condition:
• Aesthetic: Very good overall condition. The parchment-effect coating on the sphere presents magnificently patinated colors, well preserved, with no significant sun discoloration. The wooden base has been fully inspected and carefully reinforced: the structure is perfectly stable, solid and straight.
• Electrical system: Original wiring perfectly functional (features a switch on the cord). Provides a uniform illumination that projects a very warm ambient light in amber tones when turned on.
