An Italian 19th-century softwood trousseau chest with a lower drawer, measuring 92 × 39 × 71 cm.
Description from the seller
Important and authentic 18th-century trousseau chest, entirely made of solid wood and fitted with a spacious lower drawer.
This piece represents a refined and authentic testament to traditional high-era carpentry.
The period and craftsmanship are confirmed by evident structural details:
Details of construction and quality: Interior lined with Varese paper: The main compartment and the interior of the drawer are lined with an elegant antique Varese paper, characterized by refined floral motifs in ochre and brown tones, historically applied to protect fabrics and the trousseau.
Lock and Hardware in Wrought Iron: It retains the original exposed lock mounted on a hand-forged iron plate with antique nails.
Even the upper hinge bands are hand-forged and fixed with period-head faceted nails.
Woodworking and Construction: The back panel and the bottom of the drawer reveal the classic period manual workmanship with axe/scraper, with matched boards and secured by dense hand-nail perimeter fastenings.
Drawer and Base: A wide drawer at the base with traditional iron/brass pendant handles, supported by solid carved feet integrated into the structure.
Conditions: The furniture presents an excellent warm and original patina. It bears natural and fascinating signs of time (minor surface wear to the wood, natural wear on the bottom of the drawer, and period oxidation of the metal).
Note on condition: The interior Varese paper is well preserved; two small dark age spots are noted on the bottom of the drawer (clearly visible in the close-up photos).
Solid, sound piece, treated and ready to be placed in period settings or as a characterful element in modern interiors.
Dimensions: Height: 71 cm. Width: 92 cm. Depth: 39 cm.
