Antique cylindrical tin spirit measure from Germany, dating ca. 1780–1820, 17 cm high and 8 cm in diameter, weighing 838 g, with a crown-marked D.R maker’s mark and personal inscription J. A. Ost.
Description from the seller
Germany – Antique heavy tin lid-pull / measure can with a crowned master mark "D.R" and owner's inscription – ca. 1780–1820
A substantial, authentic tin lid-pull / measure jar of cylindrical form, made in Germany around the turn of the 18th to the 19th century (ca. 1780–1820).
The cylindrical body rests on a profiled stand ring and is fitted with subtle double inward-rolled ridges (biesen). The flat, lightly stepped lid features a turned central knob and bears a handsome, contemporary owner’s inscription in a graceful hand: “J. A. Ost.”
The pull has a hefty band-shaped handle with a stepped spatulate thumb rest and a sturdy, original three-part hinge. Inside the body are two original struck gauge lines (Eichstriche), indicating that this piece served as an official inn measure / capacity can.
Marks: Both on the upper part of the body near the lip and on the bottom, clearly marked with a crowned banderole mark bearing the letters D.R, with the number 16 above and 2 below.
Condition:
In very good, authentic condition with a beautifully aged, mellow patina. The hinge and lid close well and firmly. No cracks or intrusive restorations; minor age-appropriate wear consistent with age and use.
