Biography
Franz Erhard Walther (1939 in Fulda) is a German artist and counts among the most internationally influential representatives of conceptual and participatory art. He lives and works in Germany. Since the 1960s, Walther has developed a radically expanded understanding of art in which body, action, time and space take on central importance.
Internationally, Walther became known through his “Works Sets” – textile objects and fabric elements that only become artworks through the active participation of the viewers. His works push the boundaries between sculpture and performance and place the act of making above the static object. Thus Walther is regarded as a pioneer of an art that redefines the relationship between work, artist and audience.
Franz Erhard Walther has participated in major international exhibitions, including repeatedly at documenta, and has been awarded prestigious prizes, among them the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale. His works are in leading museum and private collections worldwide and have profoundly shaped the development of conceptual, performative and relational art.
