The Deacon + Gadget is a 70cl Scottish blended whisky (40% ABV) composed of peaty Islay and smoky Speyside malts, sold as a lot of five bottles with no original packaging.
Description from the seller
This is The Deacon, a striking Scottish blended whisky of 40% alcohol in a copper-coloured relief ffle. The whisky is a combination of peaty Islay single malts and smoky Speyside malt whiskies, with a flavour profile of smoke, sweet vanilla, malt and orange.
The character on the label with the bird mask and glasses suggests a plague doctor. This historical symbol is closely related to the name of the whisky and Scottish history.
The historical significance
• Medical mask: In the 17th century, doctors wore a leather mask with a long beak during plague epidemics. At the time, it was believed that the plague spread through 'bad air' (miasma). The beak was therefore filled with strong herbs, flowers and spices to mask the scent and "purify" the air.
• The glasses: The built-in round lenses were supposed to protect the doctor's eyes from contamination.
The link with 'The Deacon'
The name "Deacon" in Scottish means a skilled master craftsman or a respected craftsman. The label uses the plague doctor as a symbol for the historical pharmacists and artisans who mixed herbs and distillates (formerly seen as medicine, also called aqua vitae) at the time. It thus stands for the mastery of the master blender that composes the whisky.
