Exquisite Art Deco chest of drawers in wood with bone inlays and a marble top, made in France, estimated period 1940–1950, dimensions 72 × 62 × 31 cm, in good used condition.
Description from the seller
Exquisite piece of furniture in precious wood with delicate bone inlays in the form of small bubbles on the top of the legs and on the small skirting of the piece, extending along the sides. In its rectangular body there are two compartments with bronze handles. The legs rise as the main protagonists of the design of the piece; they are tall, slender, faceted, and are set against the main body, protruding gracefully with a slightly splayed shape that ends in a small entablature also made of bone. The top is ochre marble with reddish veins, edged in a dove-breast-shaped lip with chamfered corners.
Closely following the designs of Jacques Émile Ruhlmann (1879-1933), a renowned French furniture designer and interior decorator during the Art Déco period. Since 1911, his exquisite, elegant and refined furniture, along with various decorative objects, were exhibited at the Salons of Autumn in Paris. He was the most outstanding furniture designer at the 1925 Exposition of Decorative Arts. He used only the rarest and most exotic materials, such as tortoise shell, ivory and tropical woods. His furniture is inspired by classic Louis XVI-style designs but reinterpreted and simplified. In this case, the inspiration is clear in the shape of the legs (typical of the dressers designed by Ruhlmann) and in the inlay of small bone details.
On Art Déco style
Art Déco, short for the French term Arts Décoratifs, and sometimes simply called Déco, is a style of visual arts, architecture and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s (just before World War I) and flourished especially in the United States, but also in Europe, during the 1920s and 1930s. Art Déco combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. At its peak, it represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and a belief in social and technological progress. From its beginnings, Art Déco was influenced by the bold geometric shapes of Cubism and the Vienna Secession; the vivid colors of Fauvism and the Russian Ballets; updated craftsmanship of Louis XVI and Louis-Philippe-era furniture; and the exotic styles of China, Japan, India, Persia, ancient Egypt and Maya art. It featured rare and expensive materials, such as ebony and ivory, and exquisite craftsmanship.
