Burner - Bronze - Tortoise, Cash Coin Shell

Item Description
This is a metal incense burner (koro) modelled as a tortoise. The domed shell is an openwork lid, decorated with overlapping cash-coin motifs. Each coin has a square central hole that also serves as a vent for incense smoke. The shell lifts off to reveal a hollow body. The head, neck, legs and toes are finely modelled with crisp detail. The surface has a dark brown patina with olive-green tones in the recessed areas of the shell. The underside is cast with the eight trigrams (bagua) around a yin-yang symbol. The tortoise is a traditional East Asian symbol of longevity and good fortune, and the coin pattern adds associations with wealth. It makes a charming incense burner or desk ornament. No signature or maker's mark was found.
