P. M. Jullien’s French-language second edition of Problèmes de mécanique rationnelle, complete in two half-leather-bound volumes published in 1866 and 1867.
Description from the seller
Problems of rational mechanics, arranged to serve as applications of the principles taught in the courses.
Paris, Gauthier-Villars, printer-bookseller, 1866–1867.
Second edition – Complete work in two volumes.
Interesting nineteenth-century treatise on rational mechanics, by the Jesuit mathematician P. M. Jullien, published in Paris by the prominent scientific publisher Gauthier-Villars.
The work presents numerous mathematical and physical problems, accompanied by their analytic solutions and by geometric and mechanical figures inserted in the text.
The topics covered include statics, kinematics, dynamics, d'Alembert's principles, moments of inertia, motion of rigid bodies, oscillations, attraction, hydrostatics and hydrodynamics, with applications to the operation of machines.
There are references to the works of Newton, Euler, Huygens, Bernoulli, Lagrange, Navier and other important scholars of mechanics.
Bibliographic collations
Volume I (1866): XV, 455 pages, with figures in the text.
Volume II (1867): XIV, 549 pages, with figures in the text.
Both volumes regularly reach their respective final pages, with the inscriptions Fin du tome premier and Fin du tome second.
Volume II ends on page 549, with no further sheets afterward. The paging corresponds to the bibliographic descriptions of the edition.
Bindings
Two volumes in uniform and pleasing antique bindings in half leather, with boards covered in marbled paper, backs decorated with gold lines and ornaments, titles and numbering impressed in gold.
Condition of preservation
Copy in overall good antiquarian condition.
Bindings with abrasions, superficial cracks and normal signs of wear due to age, but still decorative.
interiors generally well preserved, with clear typographic impression and numerous figures in the text.
There are foxing, brown stains and occasional halos, more evident and widespread in the second volume. Some pages show traces of past dampness, with no apparent loss of text in the photographed parts.
19th-century scientific work in two uniform volumes, of interest to collectors of old books in mathematics, physics, engineering and the history of mechanics.
The photographs form an integral part of the description and document the actual conditions of the copy.
