Leo Setz

Jan Kruijsen was born in 1874 in Liempde and died as a Oirschot resident in a Eindhoven hospital in 1938. He was a landscape and portrait painter. Because he was self-taught, his style cannot unambiguously be identified as pertaining to a certain school. But Jan Kruijsen was, of course, inspired by contemporaries, such as Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, Cézanne and Van Gogh. His earlier works are seen as being more impressionistic, while his later works are more expressionistic in nature. He also liked to experiment, which is why his work also show some Cubist influences. His work is characterised by his appreciation for rural life and his love of the province of Brabant.

The lower right of the painting bears a monogram with two crosses, which symbolises the artist’s signature.

Condition: good

The work is framed in a gold-coloured frame.

Details: The painting has a few spots with minor craquelure, which is appropriate for a painting this age.
