It originates from the 81st Infantry Regiment established in Rome on 1 November 1884, which was used to give life to the “Torino” brigade with the 82nd Regiment.

With the enforcement of the law from 11 March 1926 about the organisation of the army, it became the 81st “Torino” Infantry Regiment. After the forming of the brigades on three regiments, it was assigned to the 22nd Infantry Brigade with the 51st and 52nd “Alpi” Regiment. It remained divided into two battalions. In 1936 it was temporarily sent to Cyrenaica.

African Campaign 1935-1936.

It took part in the 1935-1936 conflict in Ethiopia, providing reserves to various regiments and units in Cyrenaica.
From 15 July 1936 it became part of the “Torino” (type) Infantry Division, a large newly-formed binary unit which also included the 82nd Infantry Regiment and the 52nd Artillery Regiment for infantry division, and which worked in the Central Infantry School. 

War 1940-1943.

1940 - On 5 June the “Torino” (52nd) Infantry Division was formed as an “auto-transportable” task force and employed the same regiments. On 10 June 1940 the regiment had in its structure: command and command company, three riflemen battalions, 81 mm mortar company, 65/17 accompanying weapons battery. It was deployed at the Western alpine front. After the armistice with France, the Regiment moved along the border with Yugoslavia.  

1943 - In 1941 it was sent to Russia in attendance on the CSIR first and then the ARMIR. Due to the heavy losses suffered at the Russian front, the Regiment was considered dissolved because of war in February 1943 in the area of operations. On 1 June 1943 the “Veneto” Division changed its name into “Torino” Division (f. n. 0070050/2 of the S.M.R.E. on 14-05-1943) and the 255th Regiment was called 81st “Torino” Infantry Regiment, but in September 1943 it was dissolved again because of the facts that led to the armistice, while the Regiment was deployed in the area of Gorizia, still missing personnel and materials. Between 9 and 13 September the 81st Regiment faced the attacks of German units.
