“In this treatise, the author begins the education of women at the time of life when a single name is used to refer to both sexes. In the first part, he addresses their parents and their teachers and makes their education more than just that of their children or their pupils. He speaks to their nascent reason through sensible images; he uses dolls to instill little girls with their first notions of things and even gives them insights into philosophical and religious morality.
In his eyes, women play a civilizing role, and they must not be condemned to absolute ignorance on the grounds that some have made themselves ridiculous ridiculous by they presumption of their knowledge.
This treatise brings together more just and useful ideas, more practical, healthy, and moral truths than many  voluminous works written since then on the same topic.

Original edition published in 1687.

Period binding, spine with 5 gilded raised bands, red leather title piece, nicely preserved gilding. Good overall condition, 2 cm crack on the upper joint of the front cover, corners very reasonably damaged, fresh interior.
