Blanca Marsal

Alberto Pla Rubió (Villanueva de Castellón, Valencia, 1867 – Barcelona, 1937) was a Spanish painter of Impressionist style close to Valencian “luminismo” and to Sorolla, whose pictorial subject-matter is classified between social realism and traditionalism.

Pla Rubió, was pictoricaly trained at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid with Alejandro Ferrant y Fischermans and at the San Carlos school of Valencia with Ignacio Pinazo. After an initial period with anecdotal and historical works, he evolved into a philo-impressionist style within the framework of Levantine “luminism”.

Throughout his life, he obtained the first medal at the “Nacional” of 1895 for the canvas entitled ¡A la guerra! (owned by the Prado Museum, deposited in the Alcalá de Henares city hall) and a mention of first medal in the 1901 edition, the same award with which he was awarded at the 1899 Exposición General de Bellas Artes, held in Barcelona and the Munich one in 1913; he also obtained a second medal at the Paris Salon in 1901. He was a teacher at the fine art schools of Valencia and Cadiz, as well as at the the Escuela de la Lonja of Barcelona.
