4 small volumes duodecimo from [136]-387-[3]; [24]-733-[7]; [36]-484-[4]; [32]-727-[6] pages, full brown calf, ribbed spine adorned with golden fillets and florets, title pieces, red edges. 

Period binding in decent condition and very presentable, despite missing headdresses and cracks at the end of the hinges. Very fresh interior. See photos.

The first volume is decorated with the portrait of the author, and the fourth of 6 plates engraved out of text including 5 featuring characters in costumes showing us the various ways to use the divinatory wand. 

First edition of the French translation (the original Dutch edition is from 1691). 

“Très important au point de vue historique et précieux pour l'état de la Sorcellerie à cette époque. La Kabbale y est amplement démontrée et Bekker donne l'invocation des intelligences qui président aux quatre parties du monde.”  

Bekker was a Dutch preacher, an admirer of Descartes' ideas, but after the publication of his book he was prevented from preaching and sidelined and censored by the Amsterdam consistory. His work, however, had a great impact and prepared for the spirit of the Enlightenment.

 On the back of the portrait, we read a satirical handwritten sentence about the author.
