Designum was founded in 1980 by product designers Hans Ebbing, Ton Haas and Paul Schudel, graphic designers Loek Kemming, Noudi Spönhoff and Jan van den Broek of the Designers Association.
 They were looking for a way to produce the interior accessories they designed while maintaining the high quality, both in design and execution.
 By introducing their products to the market themselves, they retained control over the entire chain, from design via (small scale)  production and packaging up to distribution. In fact, they were among the first "self-producing" designers. Designum was the brand name under which they released their designs, and later also those of others. 
For the Vormgeversassociatie  (Designers Association), the brand mainly functions as a laboratory in which ideas can be developed and new forms can be researched. In close collaboration with specialised companies, materials and techniques are assessed for their application possibilities for the various designs. 
In the 24 years of its existence, Designum has built up a good reputation nationally and internationally, and has produced many special, sometimes even classic designs. In 2004 the brand as such was discontinued. 
Haas and Ebbing together formed a design agency in 1983, which some time after the sudden death of Hans Ebbing in 1986 was transformed into Ton Haas Industrial Design.

Paul Schudel continued to contribute to the Designum collection until the early 1990s, which expanded further with designs by, among others, Herman Hermsen, Ruud-Jan Kokke, Arnout Visser and Dick van Hoft, all from the Arnhem School of the Arts. Schudel then focused on art education and is still attached to the 3D Design department of the academy where he himself studied.
