A Baule mask of very elegant form and even facial features and high forehead, realistically shaped lips set with red pigment, slender, straight nose, curved arches over the downward-facing eyes with a long slit, decorative scars on the bridge of the nose, on the forehead and four fastening holes on the edge of the cheeks, there also a small damage, three-part crested hairstyle with fine lines and a small plait on the side in front of the ears; dark age patina.

The Baule belong to the Akan peoples. They migrated west to Ivory Coast more than 200 years ago, adopting the masking traditions of their neighbors, the Guro, Senufo and Yaure peoples. There are three basic types used in a special joy dance called Goli, which symbolizes social order. Most of these masks are kpan, with elaborate hairstyles and intricate carvings, and represent the elderly woman in the ceremonies. Another mask, Kplekple, represents the younger man. Round and flat, it is one of the most abstract traditional African masks. A third type, a Goli Gulin, represents the older man. Ref.: Vogel, Susan (1997), Baule, Yale, University Press.
