Byzantine bronze seal stamp. Pyramid shaped handle with integral suspension loop. Square seal face showing the bust of a Saint. The suspension loop allowed the seal to be worn on a chain, making sure it was always available. 

Height: ± 18 mm
Seal face: ± 10,6 x 10,8 mm

Condition: good solid condition, giving a sharp and detailed impression. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.

HISTORY
The history of seal stamps goes back thousands of years, to the ancient civilization in Mesopotamia. Stamps served as a type of signature on official documentation. They would be imprinted onto hot wax or clay in order to create an impression, which would be a unique mark of the owner. 

In the Byzantine Empire, seal stamps had an important administrative function. They served as the official signature of the Emperors, officials or other dignitaries. Artisans and merchants applied stamps to their products, and people used them in homes to secure closets and chests. 
Every seal gives a fascinating glimpse of the Byzantine world and the people who used them. Today, they serve as a prized artifact, showcasing the enduring beauty of Byzantine craftsmanship.
