Als auteur wordt J.W. vermeld. Het gaat om Ignatius Walvis (1653-1713) Pastoor te Gouda. Hij werd bekend als auteur van dit boek dat een chronologisch overzicht geeft van de geschiedenis van Gouda van de 12de tot de 17de eeuw. Daarnaast worden de openbare gebouwen van de stad beschreven.  
Het boek viel niet in goede aarde bij de gereformeerde kerkenraad die het omschreef als ‘dat vuijle paapse boek van den paap Walvis’. Het boek werd echter niet verboden. Walvis overleed in het jaar dat zijn beroemde stadsgeschiedenis verscheen.
