En 2006, nous avons établi un partenariat avec une petite communauté de femmes Ndebele, Sithabe Crafts, qui promeut l’artisanat traditionnel Ndebele, principalement dans le domaine du travail de la perle de verre.

Ce miroir, entièrement réalisé à la main par cette communauté est construit autour d’un toron de paille. Seuls l’utilisation de paille très fine et un savoir-faire ancestral permettent la réalisation d’une structure en paille aussi régulière. On peut l’apercevoir entre les perles sur quelques photos.

Cette structure est ensuite habillée d’un crochet de perles de verre. Les perles sont d’origine tchèque et non chinoise, ce qui garantit leur calibrage et la précision du travail. Les motifs géométriques sont typiques du style Ndebele. L’ensemble est ensuite équipé d’un miroir, d’un fond en bois puis recouvert de cuir.

Nous sommes face à un objet qui se situe à la frontière ténue entre l’objet artisanal et l’œuvre d’art. Ce miroir est aussi celui de siècles de la culture des Ndebele, connus pour leurs maisons peintes et dont plusieurs artisans ont acquis le statut d’artiste.
