 "Alice from the sea" nace después del éxito de la versión fotográfica de "Alice" de Hajime Sawatari el cual interpreta el clásico literario de Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) Alicia en el país de las maravillas donde Sawatari se involucra y recrea brillantemente los temas, formas y simbolismos dentro de la narrativa original, enfocándose en la inevitable pérdida de la inocencia infantil, de una niña confrontada por las realidades de la edad adulta. El "País de las Maravillas" de Sawatari es un mundo donde lo absurdo se yuxtapone a la realidad, donde los fenómenos de lo real se entrelazan con el inconsciente llevando a cada espectador a lo largo de una narrativa, que explora un mundo que enfrenta a los espectadores con lo surrealista, doblando los roles entre niño y adulto dentro de esta serie de fotografías inéditas. La modelo es Samantha, una niña de 10 años que fue contratada para este papel de Alicia seleccionada en una audición realizada en Inglaterra, la ciudad natal de Alicia y lugar donde se realizaron estas fotografías. 
 "Alice from the Sea" tiene un diseño exquisito, como podemos ver en las guarda, en la funda y en la edición, el libro es una secuela realizada cuatro años después usando a la misma modelo Samantha, en la costa de Escocia e Irlanda. Se añade la poesía de Shuntaro Tanikawa como en el trabajo anterior, y la encuadernación y el diseño corren a cargo de Seiichi Horiuchi.
 El libro tine su caja original y una funda de plástico extra.
