Born in Pittsburgh, Leiter moved to New York in the 1940s to follow his passion for art, initially studying painting. However, it was photography that became his main medium of expression. Although the use of black and white was still dominant in photography at the time, Leiter distinguished himself through his interest and innovation in the use of colour, which not only brought new life to his shots, but also made them more emotive and nuanced.

His photography is characterised by a strong sense of intimacy, lyricism and sensitivity. His images often portray everyday life in a discreet and poetic way, with a focus on light, shadows and reflections. The use of colour in his work is innovative and anticipates trends in contemporary photography, showing urban scenes, landscapes and portraits that seem suspended in time.
