On offer is a ‘RUBUS’ art glass vase designed by Timo Saparneva in 1968 for IITTALA Glassworks (Finland). It is a heavy, superbly crafted vase made of thick, transparent, textured art glass that imitates the rugged shape and feel of nature. Timo Saparneva was inspired by the powerful shapes of natural phenomena such as the bark of trees and melting ice of his Finnish surroundings. This vase, from 1973, evokes the texture of tree bark, though the undulating ice formations are also present. The piece displays intricately detailed ridges, and irregular and bulbous surfaces, and was made by blowing clear glass into a wooden mold and then slowly burning the mold away and thereby imprinting the texture of the wood onto the surface of the glass. The ruggedly beautiful vase functions as a stunning decorative object as well as a beautiful vessel for various flower arrangements.

The piece is clearly in the Scandinavian aesthetic, characterized by its minimalist and elegant design. The glass allows for light refractions and reflections, and gives the vase a sense of momentum. Indeed, the vase exemplifies Timo Saparneva’s unparalleled ability to design functional/utilitarian pieces that are exquisitely artistic, organic and nature-inspired. This Scandinavian modern art glass vase is highly pursued by art collectors around the world. 

MEASUREMENTS: 22 cm high; diameter of 10.5 cm.

CONDITION: A fine vintage piece with no chips, cracks or repairs. Some minor signs of age and usage..

MARKS/SIGNED: Saparneva’s initials are etched onto the bottom of the vase.

TRANSPORT: The vase will be very carefully wrapped and boxed, and shipped with a tracking code.

CREATOR: Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) was a sculptor and designer from Finland. He is mostly known for his glass design but also worked in metal, wood, porcelain and textiles. Saparneva is considered to be Finland’s most influential artist of the 20th century. His work is characterized by being organic and nature-inspired, teaming with artistic and aesthetic expression, and at the same time his creations are highly functional and utilitarian. 

IITTALA is a global Finnish design brand that is renowned for its exceptional glassware and dinnerware collections. Established in 1881, Iittala has a long and storied history of producing exquisitely crafted products that seamlessly blend art and function.
