Malaria

Lithograph (to the stone) based on the famous canvas by Antoine Auguste Ernest HEBERT (1817-1908), made between 1848 and 1850 (present in the Musée d´Orsay in Paris).

Published by H. Peyrol (Paris) and printed in the workshop of Lemercier (Paris), circa 1870-75.

Signature and rubric in pencil by Soulange Tessier (right) and signature (?) or name of Ernest Hebert in pencil (left).
Size: 73,5 x 52 cm.

Magnificent work by Soulange on the most important work of the French post-romantic painter. Serene resignation and melancholy of the characters fleeing the epidemic under a twilight light. Herbert was a special witness to the demonstrations following the various epidemics in Italy (the source of inspiration for the scene), where malaria was endemic.

A very well preserved gem, despite its age. Heavyweight paper with controlled foxing points. Lithograph plate in perfect condition.
