La culture mendé est connue pour ses magnifiques masques d'initiation et plus particulièrement ceux de la société d'initiation sande, les sowei, grands heaumes représentant une tête de femme au large front bombé. Fait relativement rare en Afrique, ces masques sont fabriqués par des hommes et portés par des femmes.

Le Sandé par contre est unique: c’est la seule société féminine d’Afrique de l’Ouest à porter des masques que sont les fameux masques-heaumes que constituent les Sowei … Masques très remarquables par leurs plis du cou. Les masques Sowei représentent un idéal de beauté féminine pour les Mendé.
