Fabrieks info:
De 400E, een van de slechts zo'n 15.000 exemplaren die in de VS werden verkocht, was het kleine broertje van de cultklassieker 500E.
Hij deelt hetzelfde door Porsche aangepaste chassis en motorruimte als de 500E, met een zuinigere 4,2-liter V8 M119, die nieuw bijna 280 pk produceerde en goed was voor een acceleratie van 0 naar 100 km/u in minder dan 7 seconden, maar toch nog steeds een verbruik van 10,7 l/100 km op de snelweg had.
Deze motor wordt algemeen beschouwd als een van de beste MBZ-motoren ooit gebouwd, en zeker een van de beste V8's aller tijden.
Een versie van dezelfde motor met meer dan 700 pk won LeMans in 1989.
