New York, a collection of photographs by Japanese photographer Keizo Kitajima. New York is one of Japan's most acclaimed art photography collections in the world. After studying at Daido Moriyama's workshop photography school, he started taking snapshots in Okinawa and established a self-operated gallery with his comrades, producing 10 monthly presentations and booklets containing snapshots of Tokyo's nightlife with a strong impact. Kitajima's approach, which emphasised the improvisational nature of photography, was highly acclaimed, and he subsequently moved to New York. He ventured into a city with an even more bizarre atmosphere than Tokyo, filled with a certain kind of fear, and like the sniper described as a ‘street devil in broad daylight’, this book is a selection of 35,000 shots from a total of 900 films taken with a strong flash. A powerful and energetic body of work that seems to expose the unknown ‘New York behind the scenes’. Winner of the Kimura Ihei Award.
