Description from the seller

Japanese Katana by Yoshikane – Gendai-tō/Showa-tō in Guntō-koshirae (Shōwa period)
This rare Japanese katana is an impressive example of a gendai-tō (現代刀), traditionally used in the Shōwa period (昭和時代) by swordsmith Yoshikane (吉包). Gendai swords like this were made in the classical manner, representing the craftsmanship of smiths whose artisanal fidelity is expressed in a time of mass production.

Historical and artistic history
Yoshikane is regarded as part of the gendai-tōkai. Their work was best used by your officers, but you should be aware of the artist’s experience. This blade here is a beautiful example of that.

Signature

The tang (nakago) is stamped with the character 吉包 (Yoshikane), a tradition illustrated in this industrial product.

Blade features & polishing
This sword has been professionally polished (Kezuri-mei - Kaki-han), probably by a polisher in Japan around 1930-1945 from a late restoration in the 1960s or 70s, which brings the intricate details beautifully to the fore.

Hamon
Elegant togari/gunome-midare pattern with subtle chōji elements; deep tempering visible at the tip.
Classic koshizori curve, demonstrating technical mastery and aesthetic balance.

Condition
You may see some red stains in the outer parts, which pass through parts of the light, but you may not need to worry about them. The edge is extremely sharp and the blade is in excellent working condition.

Specifications - Characteristic Measurements
Total length (with nakago) 86.4 cm
Blade length (nagasa) 65.7 cm
Length in koshirae 100.5 cm
Sori (curvature) about 1.7 cm
Nakago (tang) about 18 cm
Motogasaan (thick base) 7 mm
Motohaba (base width) 3.2 cm
Weight 1360 grams
Mounts – Guntō-koshirae
It was born in an original military gunto-koshirae, which is now in Japan as a Second World War officer’s piece:

The wooden saya is covered with leather, a hallmark of active use and field wear.

From the moment it is worn, it is carried into the outdoors and by the army.

From tsuka-ito (wrap around the handle) some parts have come loose and need to be re-wrapped (tsukamaki).
