Ancient Chinese Han Dynasty Pottery Rabbit Figure - with Thermoluminescence Test!
Circa 202 BC - AD 220
This rare and beautiful pottery figure represents a seated rabbit with upright ears and a slightly turned head, modelled with full, rounded haunches and thick limbs. The surface is coated in a dark slip, with traces of red pigment remaining around the mouth and inner ears. The contours are smoothly rendered, with subtle incising to define the paws and facial features. The figure rests on its hind legs.
This piece has been precisely dated using a Thermo Luminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla. The report will accompany the lot.
This pottery rabbit serves as a distinctive example of mingqi, a diverse array of objects, including representations of everyday life, animals, and other items placed in tombs to accompany the deceased in the afterlife.
Size: L:290mm / W:230mm ; 3.32kg
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
