From "Mishima Gō gashū Wakamono" 三島剛画集 若者 (Mishima Go Book of Pictures) - 1972 - Mishima Gō 三島剛 (1924-1988) - Japan

三島剛 Mishima Gō (1924-1988) A charismatic figure who led the gay erotic art of the Showa period, he continued to portray a unique image of the Japanese male child at the dawn of Japanese gay culture. His works express the loneliness and melancholy of individuals and minorities. The Cali Dewitt x Go Mishima "POETRY READING" art exhibition was held in Tokyo from January to February 2022. His work is still attracting attention. This powerful photolithograph by Go Mishima (1924–1989) is one of 24 plates from his seminal 1972 portfolio “Wakamono” (Youth), a rare and influential collection exploring male identity, eroticism, and traditional aesthetics in postwar Japan. The image depicts a young man reclining, wearing a red fundoshi (traditional loincloth) and adorned with vibrant tattoos on both arms. His pose is relaxed yet charged, evoking a tension between vulnerability and strength, tradition and subversion. Mishima’s work is often associated with gay art and underground visual culture, but also resonates with broader themes of masculinity, body politics, and cultural symbolism. The tattoos, rendered in bold floral motifs, reference Japanese irezumi traditions, historically linked to both spiritual protection and social marginality. The red fundoshi adds a layer of ritualistic and sensual intensity, contrasting with the monochrome palette of the figure’s body. Published in a limited edition in 1972 by Daini Shobō, this piece is part of a rare and culturally significant series that has been exhibited and collected internationally. It reflects Mishima’s unique position at the intersection of fine art, homoerotic expression, and Japanese visual heritage. 三島剛 Mishima Gō (1924-1988) Photolithography From "Mishima Gō gashū Wakamono" 三島剛画集 若者 (Mishima Go Book of Pictures) - 1972 Dimensions: 16.6" x 11.6" / 42.2cm x 29.7cm Material: Paper Technique: Photolithography Weight: 30g Condition I would like you to refer to the listing photos carefully, but please understand that it's difficult to show all conditions in the photos.
