PERMEKE Paul
Sidford (GB) 1918 - West-Kapelle 1990. Schilder, tekenaar, autodidact. Jongste zoon van Constant Permeke. Trok op 16 jarige leeftijd naar Lausanne wegens een meningsverschil met zijn vader omtrent zijn kunstopleiding. Terug in België leefde hij een paar jaar samen met L. Peire en R. Slabbinck in de schildersgemeenschap "Het luizengevecht" te Dudzele. Werd tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog geïnterneerd als Engels staatsburger. Schilderde vanaf 1937 taferelen in boerendorpen, woonwagens, boerenbals, kermisscènes en vermengde er elementen van impressionisme en expressionisme in. Een korte periode met irreële taferelen doet denken aan Ensor en Chagall. Het miserabilisme à la Buffet uit de jaren 1946-1947, heeft weinig betekenis in zijn oeuvre. Na een verblijf in Spanje en Portugal (1953-1954) en in het Zuiden van Frankrijk (1955) werd zijn palet lichter en zonniger. Vanaf 1960 gevestigd te West-Kapelle vond hij zijn inspiratie vooral in de polderstreek en de bewogen hemels, maar hij bleef ook trouw aan alle andere motieven die hem nauw aan het hart lagen, zoals de gewone mens, de zwerver, de visser de boer. Werk o.m. in de Musea te Antwerpen en Oostende.
